Rust Texture with Photoshop
From GMpedia.org Wiki
This tutorial describes how to create a rusty metal texture with Photoshop in few steps.
Requirements:
- Photoshop (I've used CS2 but earlier versions should be ok)

1. Open Photoshop and create a new image by hitting CTRL+N, make it 512x512 pixels with a transparent background. Set the Foreground color to a medium to light brown color, I used #b38138. Then press G to select the Paint Bucket Tool and fill the canvas with the Foreground color. |
2. Choose Filter/Noise/Add Noise with Distribution: gaussian, Percent: 15% and Monochromatic mode on. You get something like this ... |
3. Choose Filter/Blur/Motion Blur with these settings: Angle: 90, Distance 999 pixels. |
4. Choose Filter/Distort/Ocean Ripple with these settings: Size: 9, Magnitude: 9. This is what we get ... |
5. Create a new layer and set the background color to white (#ffffff), the choose Filter/Render/Clouds and set the new layer's Blending Mode to Color Burn. |
6. Now create a third layer, fill it with the foreground color and again use Filter/Noise/Add Noise with the same settings like before (Distribution: gaussian, Percent: 15% and Monochromatic mode on). Set this layer's Blend Mode to Soft Light.
7. Press SHIFT+CTRL+E to merge the visible layers and then duplicate the resulting layer either by choosing Duplicate Layer from the Layer Menu or by dragging the layer onto the New Layer icon in the Layers Panel.
8. On the duplicated layer use Filters/Sketch/Torn Edges with the following settings: Image Balance: 22, Smoothness: 11, Contrast: 17. Then set this layer's Blending Mode to Multiply. Here is what we get from this ... |
9. Duplicate the last layer once again and set it's Blending Mode to Linear Light. After that choose Filter/Stylize/Emboss with these settings: Angle: 145, Height: 1, Amount: 100. The move the layer under the second layer to make the emboss a bit less obvious. That's all, here is the final texture look ... |
