Pascal is an imperative programming language, developed by Niklaus Wirth in 1970.

Pascal was first designed to teach students structured programming, and variants of it are still used today, Free Pascal and Turbo Pascal for example.

The first compiler for Pascal was designed for the CDC 6000 series family of computers in 1970, and the first succesful port to the ICL 1900 computer.
The first compiler written in North America was made in the University of Illinois for the PDP-11 and generated native machine code.
