Microsoft DirectX is a set of low-level application programming interfaces (APIs) for creating high-performance multimedia applications; the Microsoft Windows API was designed to provide software developers direct access to low-level functions on PC peripherals.

DirectX runtimes can not be uninstalled (and neither overwritten by older versions); the newest version is DirectX 10, which is mainly known for being Windows Vista-only.
